Welcome to the Des Moines Area Practical Shooters website.
There is a rich tradition of pistol competition in Iowa. In Iowa there are National Champions, and several shooters ranked in the Top 20 Nationally. Iowa has top shooters within different shooting disciplines as well.
Did you know that there are several shooting clubs less than an hour from Des Moines?
We have Business professionals, Law enforcement professionals, Technology professionals, Blue collar, White collar, and everyone in between.
Why should you get involved?
Because life is busy, and life is hard, sometimes it feels as though we have little or no control over our direction or success. You need involvement in a sport where you have immediate control of your success. You need a sport that does not require you to be the fastest runner, or highest jumper. You need a sport that does not eat every ounce of your free time. You need the USPSA.
Come and watch! When you are ready to participate you can borrow most of the gear you will need from other shooters, we are a generous bunch. Much of the gear you will look to accumulate is inexpensive, and other shooters will help you find it. Use the email link below to ask us what you will need to get started.
There is no compromise on safety. If you cannot listen to safety instructions, follow the safety instructions and , handle your firearm with the utmost care and concern for yourself and the others around you then this sport is not for you.
If your thoughts about shooting are mixed with visions of being an “Action Hero”, then there is no place for you in this sport. We are about comradery, friendship, and mentoring new shooters, and having fun while doing it.
If you have a fragile ego, if you do not enjoy the journey it takes to be the best at something, if you cannot celebrate other people’s success, then this is not the sport for you.
